Bylaw Enforcement Services

By Kevin Swanson, Director of Protective Services, City of Brooks

The City of Brooks Protective Services has been contracted by the County of Newell to provide on average 40 hours of bylaw enforcement services per week for the County of Newell. Hours of work will vary between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm seven days a week. Brooks Protective Services currently has three (3) seasoned veteran Special Constables to provide such service on rotating basis. They are S/Cst. John Nesbitt, S/Cst. Jamie Brown and S/Cst. Dennis Gordon. Soon to be added to this complement will be a fourth Special Constable that is currently going through the hiring process for the position of manager of bylaw enforcement services. As a working manager, this fourth Special Constable will also do their fair share of bylaw enforcement activities within the County of Newell.

County residents are encouraged to contact their bylaw enforcement services staff through our Protective Services Office # 362-2331. Calls will be directed to the appropriate S/Cst. during normal business hours Monday – Friday. After hours and weekends please leave a message as this phone is checked regularly for messages during the off hour periods. For emergencies please dial 911 and speak with the RCMP.

To maintain a safe community, our Special Constables ensure compliance in a fair and impartial way with County of Newell Bylaws and Provincial Legislation within the County of Newell via active patrols and/or on a response to complaint basis. Traffic Safety and Protection of the Road Infrastructure are Paramount. Expect to see our Special Constables teaming up occasionally with the RCMP, Department of Transportation Officers, Alberta Provincial Sheriff’s and/or Fish and Wildlife Officers. These Joint Traffic Initiatives are important in maintaining Traffic Safety as many infractions may be found in a relatively short period of time involving officers with a variety of expertise, thus making the roadway and vehicles driving on that roadway safer. Another benefit is the ability to get to know who’s in our County and what they are doing at a given point in time. Subsequently, should there be an incident later on in our County this information may assist towards a positive investigative outcome.

Our Protective Services Staff look forward in serving your diverse bylaw enforcement services needs through out your thriving County. All calls are welcome!!! Thank you,

Kevin Swanson
Director of Protective Services
City of Brooks.
